Fall in Trevelin: The Ultimate Patagonia Fishing & Hunting Experience
Experience the magic of fall in Trevelin, Argentina. Fish world-class rivers, hunt Red Stag & upland birds, and enjoy PRG’s top-tier lodging & guides.
Why Fall is Our Favorite Season:
I’ve watched a lot of seasons come and go in Patagonia, but fall always calls me back in a special way. There’s a warmth in the cool mornings, a richness to the landscape as the leaves turn gold, and a crispness in the air that reminds you there’s something rad about this time of year.
At PRG South, outside of Trevelin / Esquel arguably the most sought-after region in all of Argentina for both fishing and hunting – It’s a time when our waters light up with possibility, our hunting dogs perk their ears in anticipation, and every day feels like an adventure waiting to happen. From Trevelin, PRG offers some of the most exclusive Red Stag hunting on the planet. A trip to the South in the fall is full of variety: hungry brown trout, quail hunting, and the pursuit of Red Stag.

Why Trevelin?
If you’ve never ventured to Trevelin or Esquel, let me paint the picture. The region boasts over two dozen fishable rivers, ranging from small spring creeks like Gualjaina and Arroyo Pescado to broader flows such as the Rio Grande. You’ll also find breathtaking glacial-fed waters within Los Alerces National Park. The sheer variety means an angler can fish a different river daily, taking in dramatic changes of scenery and style—one morning you’re tossing a tiny dry fly to rising rainbows in a clear creek, the next, you’re floating a scenic river casting to lurking browns.
For me – I explain to folks that the diversity is the real draw here. It’s not just that you can wade or float, fish with dries or streamers, or even spot-nymph if that’s your thing—it’s that you can do it all, in a single trip. And for me, fall is the best time to explore. The summer crowds (which are already not that many) have eased, and the trout seem to sense the change in weather, going on heavier feeds before winter sets in.
If you’re looking for hard-fighting rainbows, heavy browns, brook trout or a landlocked salmon, the rivers and lakes around our South program have it all.
The Rhythm of Fall
I often wake up early, I like that feeling of chill in the air— then onto my first cup of coffee or Matè. The wind tends to mellow out by late April, especially after the equinox, which means calmer conditions for both fly casting and upland bird hunting.
And yes, you read that right: upland bird hunting. Our dogs—well-trained pointers full of energy—come alive in the fall, noses to the ground, leading you across the fields in search of fast-flushing quail. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a covey rise when the morning frost is still visible on the grass. It can be a real test of reflexes and aim, but every successful shot—and even the misses—become stories you’ll share back at the lodge that evening over a hearty meal.
Hunting & Fishing, Autumn Bliss
For those who crave a bit of both, that why we have our Fall Cast & Blast programs which you the flexibility to spend some days stalking trout, others hunting upland birds—or even consider a Red Stag outing if that’s on your bucket list. The terrain around Trevelin supports some of the largest free-range red stag in Argentina, and their rut peaks right around this time. Hearing a stag roar at dawn is an experience you won’t soon forget.
I’ve seen how combining different activities can elevate your trip. If you’re new to the thought of coming to Argentina, there’s a sense of discovery each morning—you might drive out to a secluded bend in the Rio Grande, or head into a quiet valley for wingshooting with the dogs. The crisp fall air keeps you energized all day, and by the time you settle in for dinner, you’ve earned the delicious cuisine that PRG’s chef’s pride themselves on.
A World-Class Lodge
At the center of all this is PRG’s Lodge at Trevelin, designed to place you within striking distance of Patagonia’s finest rivers and hunting grounds. One of the things I love most about the lodge is how it balances comfort with practicality for our guests & anglers. You’re never more than a short drive from productive water, whether you decide to float the big rivers or wade one of the hidden gems nearby. Return in the evening to a 200+ bottle whiskey bar, great food, single-room accommodations (at no extra cost), and great, personalized service that makes you feel at home.
It’s also worth noting that our guide staff carefully rest our waters so the trout aren’t bombarded by angling pressure day after day. This means when you step into a crystal-clear creek to make your first cast, you’ve got a real chance at fooling fish that haven’t been spooked by traffic in weeks. And when it comes to variety, I can’t stress enough how each water type has its own personality. From match-the-hatch dry fly fishing or stripping streamers in the deeper runs, the guides are ready with the right flies and expertise to switch methods whenever needed.

Customizing Your Stay
Most guests book a week-long program, but if your schedule is tighter, three-day stays can be arranged. If you want an even broader adventure one plus week long, you can combine Trevelin with PRG North. But let me tell you: the Trevelin/Esquel region itself is so rich with possibilities that many anglers never want to leave.
In the end, fall in Trevelin is about experiencing the best of Patagonia at a pace that suits you. Whether you’re sight-fishing for trout, watching the dogs lock on point for quail, or simply savoring a whiskey by the fireplace, this season has a special kind of magic. If you ask me, it’s the diversity—of waters, species, and pursuits—is what convinced me to call this place home. And I have a feeling once you step foot here really at any time but ESPECIALLY fall, you’ll understand exactly why.
