WELCOME TO MAMUIL MALAL
Estancia Mamuil Malal is located at the base of the Lanin Volcano on the south bank of the Malleo River. The owners, Bertil and Dolores Grahn, offer their home as a casual, original and genuine homestead. Mamuil Malal takes a maximum of eight anglers in four double rooms with private baths. The lodge consists of a ground floor with a classic English-style country living room, bar and dining area. Guest rooms are distributed throughout the second level and the owners occupy the third floor. The Grahns serve home cooked meals and take pride in local and traditional dishes that are both hearty and delicious.
Staying at Estancia Mamuil Malal is a unique experience providing an unparalleled opportunity to fish the best of the Malleo River with a short five to ten-minute drive. A true gem of the Mamuil Experience is having exclusive access to the creek that runs through their property. This stretch of water provides easy walk wading for nonstop dry fly action and one of the best views in all of Patagonia.
Some guests believe the lodge is too casual; others make Mamuil Malal part of their annual routine and return each year to fish the Malleo and enjoy Bertil and Dolores’ hospitality. The estancia and the Grahns are true treasures of the ranching world in Patagonia.
Not many outfitters take guests to this lodge, not because the lodge is unworthy, but because the Grahn family stays within a closed circle of friends. PRG north director, Alex Knull, has known the Grahns since he was a child. This relationship allows PRG north guests the opportunity to stay at this perfect location and feel very comfortable. Guests typically stay at Mamuil Malal for up to four nights then combine with a second estancia such as Estancia Quemquemtreu, Tres Lagos Lodge, Tres Rios Lodge or Arroyo Verde.

MAMUIL MALAL HIGHLIGHTS
Mamuil Malal
River Access
Mamuil Malal has private access to fifteen miles of the upper Malleo river- one of the world’s greatest trout rivers. This river is one of the most beautiful places you can ever fish and, although not a spring creek, offers spring creek-like match the hatch dry fly fishing. The water, terrain, rising fish and hatches are unbelievable. Located just ten minutes from the lodge is Tromen Lake, which offers exceptional lake fishing similar to lakes in Los Alerces National Park. Floats on the Alumine River are less than an hour away and offers unbeatable fishing with beautiful views. A spring creek also runs through the property providing a secondary stream for those who enjoy wading small spring creeks. There is a variety of fishing for every angler.

Food + Drink
The delicious home cooked meals are prepared by the house staff and consist of traditional family recipes. Breakfast is simple and satisfying. Cooked to order eggs and bacon are on the menu every morning paired with self-serve tea and coffee. The three-course dinner consists of a starter, hearty main course and a simple, but beautifully presented dessert. Typical dishes include delicious meats, milanesa, rich and hearty pastas and raviolis paired with various side dishes consisting of vegetables and potatoes – a perfect menu for the steak and potato lover. The food is plentiful, rich, tasty, homemade goodness. As usual, accommodations can be made to fit any food preference. Appetizers are served every day at the bar before dinner along with local wine, beer and spirits.

Comfort
One moment Bertil is out herding cattle, the next he is politely greeting you to his home. Service at Mamuil Malal is more casual than traditional fishing lodges. This is not a five star accommodation, this lodge is a gaucho’s home turned into a comfortable, casual fishing lodge. The perfect guest for this lodge is one who does not wish to be waited on, but who really wants to understand and partake in an authentic estancia way of life. With some luck, you might be invited to join them on a once in a lifetime experience during your stay! Bertil is often going to the mountains to round up cattle or taking his dogs out for a hog hunt. Simply put, the family goes about their business as they would any other day, and you are there to experience it.

Authentic Experience
Staying at this lodge really is one of the most authentic estancia experiences you can get. Bertil and Dolores are part of the original family owners of this estancia. 100 years later they are striving to continue the family tradition. You will really understand a true gaucho the moment you meet Bertil – cowboy hat, revolver, bombachas de campo and ascot included. On a daily basis, Bertil is out on the estancia branding and herding cattle, while Dolores makes sure the house is in perfect condition. Polo is often played on the lawn, so don’t be surprised if you get to see a game! You will learn to adapt to the family and their way of life and get a real feeling of what life on an estancia is like.
