Quemquemtreu

Estancia Quemquemtreu: A Living Legacy of Patagonia

Estancia Quemquemtreu spans nearly 200,000 acres and is one of the largest working ranches in northern Patagonia. Over 100 years old, it was the original headquarters of a million-acre cattle operation and continues to thrive today with more than 5,000 total Hereford cattle. The lodge is powered sustainably, with a river turbine and solar panels providing all electricity. It’s a reminder that life on Quemquemtreu is intimately connected to the land.

Guests are welcomed with laid-back hospitality makes every stay feel personal. The main lodge offers nine spacious rooms, a cozy sitting room centered on a rock fireplace, and a separate bar building where guests can relax before dinner. A newer hunters lodge adds flexibility for single rooms while keeping the daily guest count to 12 rods.

Fishing from Quemquemtreu is world-class. The property provides private access to more than 30 miles of the Collón Cura River, with ideal walk-wade stretches, hidden sloughs, back channels, and outstanding float opportunities. The nearby Quemquemtreu Creek, exclusive to the estancia, offers intimate walk-wading during November, December, early January, and May.

Beyond the rivers, the journey to Quemquemtreu builds a sense of remoteness and timeless Patagonia. Gauchos tending cattle, historic buildings, and sweeping wilderness create an atmosphere where every corner feels authentic. Dining is a highlight, from hearty breakfasts with homemade bread and jams to traditional asados over open flames in the evenings, complemented by Argentine wines and seasonal vegetables. A stay at Quemquemtreu is more than fishing. It’s an immersion into the heart of Patagonia’s ranching heritage.

Estancia Mamuil Malal: A Genuine Patagonian Homestead

Nestled at the base of Lanin Volcano on the south bank of the Malleo River, Estancia Mamuil Malal is an intimate lodge with just eight anglers in four double rooms with private baths. Owners Bertil and Dolores Grahn offer casual, genuine hospitality in a classic English-style country house, where hearty, traditional meals and warm service set the tone for an authentic estancia stay.

Fishing from Mamuil Malal is a true highlight of PRG North. Guests enjoy exclusive access to the Malleo River and a private creek running through the property, perfect for nonstop dry-fly action with spring-creek-like conditions. Just minutes from the lodge, Tromen Lake and nearby Alumine River floats expand the fishing variety. Guests can wade small spring creeks or explore some of Patagonia’s most beautiful trout waters.

The Grahn family preserves the essence of estancia life: Bertil works the ranch daily—branding cattle and riding across the property—while Dolores ensures the lodge remains welcoming. Guests may witness polo games on the lawn, see gauchos at work, or simply relax on the terrace with breathtaking mountain and river views. This balance of casual elegance, intimate access, and world-class fishing makes Mamuil Malal a rare and coveted experience in Patagonia.

Arroyo Verde

Estancia Arroyo Verde: Luxury Meets Untamed Beauty

For anglers seeking a more deluxe lodge experience, Estancia Arroyo Verde offers a stunning setting in a magical valley alongside the crystal-clear Trafúl River. The main house accommodates up to ten guests, while a private cabin overlooking Lake Trafúl provides a secluded experience. Service is top-tier, lodging is elegant, and the scenery is unmatched.

Arroyo Verde’s fishing is as spectacular as the surroundings. Guests enjoy exclusive access to over ten miles of the Trafúl River, with challenging but rewarding conditions for brown and rainbow trout with some exceeding 28 inches. Additional nearby rivers such as the Filo Hua Hum and Caleufú offer further exploration, and the property’s spring creek provides walk-wade options for anglers who enjoy intimate water.

Non-fishing guests are equally well served. Horseback riding, hiking, birdwatching, and proximity to Nahuel Huapi National Park make Arroyo Verde an exceptional destination for families or groups with varied interests. Meals are elegant, locally sourced, and paired with premium Argentine wines, ensuring every bite reflects the region’s culture and flavors.
